Pine Barrens Chapter
After some great legwork from our members and RGS Biologist Mark Banker, we moved forward on our first habitat project in Feb 2003. We had been working with a few Foresters from the state of NJ to identify an area in Brendan T. Byrne State Forest (Formerly Lebanon Forest). After pouring over maps and walking some of the 34,644 acres, we picked our spot and moved forward on February 8th.

We are partnering with the State Foresters to help with their initiative to thin out red maple and encourage growth of the Atlantic white cedars in the area. This is great for the grouse because it thins the forest which allows sunlight to penetrate and creates successional growth for the future. Young forests are great habitat for the grouse!

Your help is needed if we are going to be successful. We need members to get involved. We are hoping this is our first of many projects to help bring back Pine Barrens grouse numbers. We need your help...

Read a newspaper article about our February habitat day.

August Update Pine Barrens Chapter had another succesful "Habitat Day" on August 9th, 2003. We met at the Forest Resource Education Center in Jackson. The facility has a greenhouse on the campus that develops cedar & oak seedlings. Working with our good friend Bill Zipse from NJ Forestry we helped in the greenhouse area weeding and developing new growth. This was not strenuous work and was a great Summer project. Please think about attending the next one. We can use the help.
